You learn nothing by approaching loudly. The most honest behaviour happens when the subject forgets you exist. The same is true of usability testing. The moment you ask "is this confusing?" you've contaminated the answer. Set the camera up. Sit still. Watch what they actually do, not what they say they did. The first ten minutes of any session are noise. The truth shows up at minute eleven.
Bird watching is mostly sitting in damp grass for two hours waiting for something that may not come. Research is the same. The insight isn't in the first interview, or the second. It's in the fourteenth, when someone says something off-hand that suddenly explains the previous thirteen. You don't get to skip the waiting. The teams that try to skip it ship the wrong product, beautifully.
A serious birder can identify a species without ever seeing it. They know the sounds of every bird in their range so deeply that a single call from deep in a tree tells them everything. Same with users. Once you've spent enough time with the people who use your product, you stop needing to interview them to know what they'll say. You can hear their voice in the room before they walk in. That's when you've actually done the work.
